Ground Support Engineer (GSE)
 
Main Purpose of this Role

The Ground Support Engineer (GSE) is a key member of the Operations team, providing courteous and expedient engineering level support to customers.  The GSEs are also responsible for the monitoring and control, and anomaly resolution of ground and network operations on a 24/7/365 basis.  The GSE will work on a team of 3 to 4 people who have a mix of experience including IP, RF, and System Engineering. 

Key Areas of Responsibility and Accountability
  • Pro-actively monitor network and ground antenna system performance
  • Analyze traffic data and trends and escalate areas of concern to the network design authority when appropriate
  • Initiate, review, update and resolve trouble tickets clearly and concisely              
  • Diagnose and resolve confirmed faults within the Antenna System or IP Network
  • Report operational status to operations and corporate management
  • Interface with ground, network, and spacecraft engineers for fault investigation and resolution
  • Serve as the primary customer contact for routine operations coordination and problem resolution
  • Develop, maintain, and enhance monitoring and reporting tools used by the Operations staff
  • Initiate investigations of interference detected at the spacecraft or ground antennas
  • Assist in the design of tools used by the Operations team
  • Develop, maintain and enhance the procedures used by the Operations team
  • Maintain a clear and concise activity log
  • Be available for on-call duty as assigned               
 
Requirements

Education & certifications: 
  • BS in Engineering, computer science or equivalent experience with communications satellite systems or similar advanced technical support role
Skills:
  • Excellent troubleshooting and anomaly resolution skills
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Excellent/good command of MS Office package (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio)
  • Language skills: English; any additional languages are highly desirable
  • Good communication skills, both in writing and verbal
  • Ability to convey complex technical issues equally to customers who are technical and non-technical individuals
  • Ability to work in a time-critical environment
Experience & specific knowledge:
  • Minimum three years’ work experience in a similar role
  • Customer facing IT over Satellite networks experience a plus
  • Experienced with the use of trouble reporting and logging systems 
  • Good knowledge of enterprise-class IP infrastructure (routers/switches/firewalls)
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP fundamentals including, but not limited to: protocols, architecture, acronyms, interfaces and QoS        
  • Software development, systems design or administrator level knowledge of Linux based operating systems
  • Fundamental understanding of communications satellites and the use of satellites in telecommunications networks
  • Experience with  Satellite spectrum monitoring, fault finding and resolution

Other requirements:
  • Must be able to work in a 24/7 rotating shift environment and be capable of making independent decisions and judgments under time critical conditions
